How to Recondition a Car Battery at Home

Types Of Batteries That Can Be Reconditioned

Lithium-Ion Batteries
These batteries are rechargeable and becoming more popular, yet they’re costlier than the standard battery types. There are several ways to recondition a lithium-ion battery.

NiCad Rechargeable Batteries
Nickel-based batteries suffer from performance issues, primarily when recharged before they’re completely dead. To restore the performance, reconditioning is required, which needs putting high voltage on the battery terminals.

NiMH Rechargeable Batteries
The Nickel Metal Hydride is another rechargeable battery that’s better than the NiCad. To recondition a NiMH rechargeable battery, you would like to run deep charge cycles to regain the performance.

Lead Acid Car Batteries
These voltaic cell batteries don’t require tons of effort to recondition. You can complete off all of the cells with distilled water, which helps to apply a slow charge to the battery.

AGM and Gel Type Batteries

To recondition a car battery you should follow this step-by-step guide on how to recondition a car battery at home.

Prepare the following materials first:

-Disposable rubber gloves
-A mask
-Goggles
-Flathead screwdriver
-Battery charger
-Funnel
-Distilled water (1 gallon)
-Baking soda (powder)
-Bucket
-Voltmeter
-Battery terminal cleaner.
-Apron
-Toothbrush (used or new)

After you have got the materials, you must follow this car battery reconditioning process step by step

STEP 1

Before preparing your battery for reconditioning, you need to wear your protective gear: apron, gloves, mask, and goggles. In addition, make a weak baking soda and water solution on the side to neutralize any sudden spills and splashes.

STEP 2

You need to remove the corrosion in the battery terminal. Prepare a paste-like solution of bicarbonate of soda and water with a ratio of 2:1. Grab your toothbrush and dip it into the paste-like solution, then rub it against the battery terminal to remove corrosion.
You can use wire wool or sandpaper grit if the corrosion is tough.

STEP 3

When you are done removing the corrosion, you measure the volt reading of the battery using a voltmeter. Check the connection of the cable to the battery terminal. The proper connection must be set like that: the red wire to the positive battery terminal and the black cable to the negative terminal.
Then read the voltage, for reading between 12.6v and higher, your battery is still in good condition.

STEP 4

Grab your flat head screwdriver and take away the battery caps. Place all battery caps in a temporary container to avoid losing them. Then, slowly lift your battery and pour out the old electrolyte solution within the bucket.
Do not throw the old battery acid solution. Neutralize it by pouring 500 grams of bicarbonate of soda powder into the bucket.

STEP 5

Prepare a baking soda and water solution with a ratio of 2:1 or 1:1. Mix well and fill each battery cell with the bicarbonate of soda solution. After filling up all cells, lock it back with the caps then shake it gently. Let the shaking last for about 30 seconds to a moment. After, unlock the caps and pour out the solution into the same bucket utilized in the previous step.

STEP 6

Next, replace the old battery electrolyte solution with Epsom salt solution with one molar concentration or by dissolving 120 grams in one liter of distilled water. Mix well until no solids are left undissolved. Then refill each cell then cover it with its cap.

STEP 7

The next step is to recharge the reconditioned battery at 12V / 2 amps slow charging mode. The charging usually takes around 24 to 36 hours. After charging, read the voltage of the battery employing a voltmeter. If the reading is around 12.42V to 12.6V, then your battery is in excellent condition already.

STEP 8

The last step is to subject your reconditioned car battery for a load test. You will need a battery load tester which can be bought from any hardware store.
To pass the load test, it must successfully maintain 9.6V for 15 seconds at half the CCA rating.
